The Cheriton Players will present their production of Wyrd Sisters this coming April!

"When Duke Felmet murders King Verence and takes over Lancre on the Discworld®, three witches are tasked with protecting the king’s baby son, Tomjon: Granny Weatherwax (intolerant, self opinionated, powerful), Nanny Ogg (down to earth, common) and Magrat Garlick (innocent, naive, slightly hippy). In a script that channels inspiration from the juiciest plot twists of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Hamlet, plus a dose of essential HG Wells time-travel we encounter a wicked duke and duchess, the ghost of the murdered king, dim soldiers, strolling players plus a land in peril. And who stands between the Kingdom and destruction? Our three witches. Tickets are on sale and selling fast!"

When: 23rd-27th April 2024 Venue: Cheriton Village Hall, Cheriton, Alresford, Hants SO24 0PZ Time: 19.30 all shows Tickets: £13, available online from https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/cheritonplayers

01) LETTER FROM YOUR EDITOR: THE PLAY’S THE THING

Dear Readers, if you're still out there,

I was astonished to discover, upon digging out the last 2022 issue, that it’s been almost ten months to the day since I put together that might-be-final issue. I won’t take refuge in the traditional ‘where did the time go?’ because I know exactly where it went: on working part-time, reading and daydreaming and jogging and gardening and – well, being past retirement age now, I finally retired last month and am now happy just being a housewife and, er, the… other one.

I devoted something on the order of at least 8,000 hours to working on Wossname since I was first asked to contribute some reviews and essays to it. That’s a lot of hours for a duty I only took on as a favour to a friend. But I also made a promise to another friend, who happens to be one of the most important people in the career of Sir Terry Pratchett mayherestinpeace, that I would continue to promote live performances of Discworld plays once they started up again post-pandemic. Which they now have. So here I am, starting to redeem that promise. I should have done it earlier, as it’s been several months since I was given the first lot of info on upcoming plays in 2023, but at least I’ve managed to get this issue out with several weeks to spare before those plays start their runs...

02) DISCWORLD PLAYS NEWS

There seem to be rather a lot of productions of Wyrd Sisters coming up – all but two of the productions listed below! Plenty of other brilliant Pratchett plays out there, most of them expertly rendered from novel to play by Stephen Briggs, but Wyrd Sisters does seem to have become a Pratchett go-to for amateur companies. Speaking of last hurrahs...

The countdown has begun!

The end of the Bakehouse Theatre is nigh, but hopefully this won't be the end of the wonderful Unseen Theatre company, Fourecks' oldest and most dedicated stagers of Discworld plays. In the meantime, here's an opportunity to thank the Bakehouse gang in person, and to possibly snaffle some Discly treasures.

Here be Unseen stalwart Pamela Munt with the news:

Hi All,

I am sure that you will all have heard this already, but our "home" for our Pratchett Plays is gone! Bakehouse Theatre's lease expires on 31st May and our new landlords are not renewing it. They want to use the building for their own purposes.

We have not yet worked out quite what this means for our company, but it will certainly not be the same! We may decide to hire a new theatre but we simply don't know yet because Granny Weatherwax is so busy sorting out the Bakehouse "retirement", that she has not had time to consider this at her leisure. We hope to get back to you as soon as we sort out how to stop her from flying around the Disc to turn back time.

Meanwhile the Bakehouse Theatre is holding an auction to send some of both its and Unseen's beloved bits and pieces only because we now have nowhere to store them. Come and have a browse and bid on whichever ones take your fancy. Not the least of these is Nanny Ogg's stocks from Wyrd Sisters. What a wonderful way to welcome your guests at home!

AUCTION WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY 25TH MAY AT 11.30AM

THEATRE WILL BE OPEN AT 9.30AM FOR YOUR PERUSAL

Unseen Theatre's production of Going Postal starts this week!

"Moist von Lipwig is a con artist. He has excellent qualifications and experience for this line of work. He is a fraud, a natural born-criminal, an habitual liar, a perverted genius and totally untrustworthy. This is the sort of man to whom Lord Vetinari (Patrician of Ankh-Morpork) offers a life choice – be hanged, or put Ankh-Morpork’s ailing postal service back on its feet. It is going to be a tough decision for Moist, but perhaps there’s a shot at redemption for a man who’s prepared to push the envelope? Of course before he comes anywhere close to success, he will have a multitude of problems to overcome. Just to mention a few, there is his parole officer Mr. Pump – a golem made of clay who, like any other government official, is tireless in his sense of duty; there are tons of undelivered mail who insist on talking to him; the shadowy characters from the Grand Trunk Company want him deader than his dead letters, and his new “girlfriend” sees straight through him. So much for SWALK! And here he'd thought that all he'd have to face was rain, snow, gloom of night, and the odd vicious dog or two..."

Alsager Community Theatre are staging their production of Wyrd Sisters this week!

"It looks as if someone has cast a spell over local award-winning amateur theatre group, Alsager Community Theatre, and we have allowed first time director, Steve White, to dive into the uncharted waters of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld... Steve tells us 'I’ve been reading the Discworld novels since last century and I’ve even performed in two Discworld plays as a nearly dead wizard and a troll. Perfect qualifications to direct any play. I’m also thrilled to be working at ACT with an enthusiastic cast of new and established faces. We are confident that audiences will enjoy an excellent and entertaining evening.'"

* GOING POSTAL IN EMERALD, FOURECKS (OCTOBER)

The Gemco Players will present their production of Going Postal in
October! "Moist von Lipwig was a con artist, a fraud and a man faced
with a life choice: be hanged, or put Ankh-Morpork's ailing postal
service back on its feet. It was a tough decision. With the help of a
golem who has been at the bottom of hole in the ground for over two
hundred years, a pin fanatic and Junior Postman Groat, he's got to see
that the mail gets through. In taking on the evil chairman of the Grand
Trunk Semaphore Company, and a midnight killer, he's also got to stay
alive. Getting a date with Adora Bell Dearheart would be nice, too. In
the mad world of the mail, can a criminal succeed where honest men have
failed and died? Perhaps there's a shot at redemption for man who's
prepared to push the envelope..."

According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world’s only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. The armies of good and evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, fish are falling, and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Attention Fourecksian thespians! This is your opportunity to get in on the next Discworld production by Adelaide's famous Unseen Theatre!

WHEN: Sunday July 1st at 3pm.
WHERE: Bakehouse Theatre, 255 Angas Street, Adelaide
REHEARSALS: A ten week rehearsal period starting on Sunday 15th July. We rehearse Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sundays either afternoon or evenings (negotiable with cast)

"Auditions are conducted in groups, doing a 'cold' read from excerpts of the script. You do NOT need to make a specific individual appointment, but you do need to show up ON TIME. It is not a requirement, but you may find it useful to familiarise yourself with the book, or with any other works from Terry Pratchett. It will help you get a feel for the show. If, after the group reading you would like the Director to see an individual monologue from you, please let us know when you come in to auditions. Monologues should be no longer than 1min."

For full details and a list of which parts are available to audition for, go to http://unseen.com.au/news/audition-eric-sunday-july-1st-3pm/
